Image Resizing Plug-in for Photoshop

ON1 creates world-class photo editing software applications for photographers to save them time. That said, advancements in resizing don’t happen very often so my last article on the subject was in 2013 when onOne Perfect Resize 7.5 came out. In that article I also compared Lightroom and Alien Skin BlowUp, but I’ve long abandoned both for resizing when making prints. Perfect Resize (formerly known as Genuine Fractals) is the industry standard for enlarging and resizing images. It is renowned across the photographic and printing industries for its ability to increase image size without the loss of sharpness or detail that you might normally expect.

onOne Software has rebranded Genuine Fractals, the industry standard for image resizing, as Perfect Resize. The new version has quite a few improvements to make enlarging your images easier and faster, but most importantly, look substantially better than what you can do with Photoshop alone. Many features on users’ wish lists were addressed by onOne to create a real creative tool versus what was considered a utility plug-in.

The output quality is better than ever, and given the improvement in quality of poster printers for small studios, professional photographers will get excellent results from nearly any DSLR with less time and money spent on reprinting test prints. In addition to the new name, some great features were added. One, in particular, is Tiling so that nearly any printer (that supports full-bleed output) can be used to assemble large posters. Cropping, Texture Control, Film Grain, and Gallery Wrap are all features that are easy to employ from within the workspace after launching the plug-in from the File>Automate menu. Getting the sharpest, most accurate output is easier in this new update with the addition of a Loupe viewer and Smoothness control that help to dramatically reduce visual artifacts. The onscreen viewing may be deceiving, depending on magnification, but the prints are very good and lose the stand-way-back-to-look-good effect often required with increasing image resolution.

Perfect Resize 7 is available individually or as part of the Perfect Photo Suite bundle and is an excellent value—either way. onOne Software offers free support, as well as online tutorials, so it’s very intuitive for all levels of users. The Professional Edition is extremely useful, but if you don’t need CMYK support, gallery wrapping, or support for Lightroom and Aperture, a Standard Edition ($159.95) is also available. The industry standard not only maintains its title but also raises the bar for creative professionals.

A few weeks ago I received an email offering a 50% discount on some image enlargement software, BenVista PhotoZoom Pro 4 for Windows.

The examples in the promotional email were very impressive, and, to be honest, rather unbelievable. Since they offer a free trial, I thought I might as well download it and at least give it a try.

I cropped a small section from one of my images, then resized it by 400% using PhotoZoom Pro 4, onOne Perfect Resize 7, and Photoshop. For PhotoZoom and Perfect Resize I used the default enlargement settings. For Photoshop I used the Bicubic Sharper method. This resized the original image from 666x650px to 2664x2600px (2665x2601px for Perfect Resize).

You can download JPEGs of the resized files here: Perfect Resize, PhotoZoom Pro 4, Photoshop Bicubic sharper. (I used TIFFs for the actual comparison, but they are too large to put on the website).

For viewing on screen, I prefer the Photoshop resized version. The Perfect Resize and PhotoZoom Pro versions both look like they have had a watercolour paint filter or something similar applied to them.

Normally I don't print my photos, but there's not much point testing image resizing programs without prints, since that's what enlarging an image is usually used for. So I printed each file through Photoshop on some Ilford glossy photographic paper.

For the printed images, Perfect Resize 7 came out with the most apparent detail / sharpness, followed by Photo Zoom Pro 4, then Photoshop Bicubic Sharper in last.

The colours of the bush and telegraph pole where they are against the sky look much better in the printed Perfect Resize image than the other two. The Photoshop version appears much more contrasty. However, they all look virtually the same (in terms of colour and tone) on the computer, so I think this is more likely down to the printer being a bit unpredictable.

The Photoshop and PhotoZoom versions have more grain, which is visible (when looking closely) in the printed images. The Perfect Resize version, meanwhile, has less visible grain / noise.

So Perfect Resize seems like the best image enlargement software to me. However, from normal viewing distances (for larger images you generally view from further away), there is very little difference between any of the methods.
